AC unit life expectancyOne of the most commonly asked questions for people who live in extreme temperature locations like Phoenix is, how long do AC Units last in extremely hot places? The truth, however, is there is no simple answer to this question. The life expectancy of any mechanical item depends on several factor including routine maintenance, installation of the item and how frequently it is used. However, there are some specific factors for AC units that often impact how long they will function properly.

Factors that affect how long your AC unit will last

First Factor – Was the Original AC Unit sized correctly for the Home?

One of the most common factors in deciding whether or not an AC Unit will last a long time in extreme heat is if it is the correct size for the home. Most of the time professional HVAC installers will use load calculation programs to determine the recommended size of an AC Unit for a house. However, this doesn’t mean the original owner or home builder will always use this recommended measurement. If the unit is properly sized, then it should work well in extreme heat locations for several years (12-15 years in most cases). But if the unit is over or undersized, this number can be reduced significantly.

Second Factor – Was the AC Unit Installed with proper Duct Work?

Another important factor that determines how long an AC Unit will last in extreme temperature cities like Phoenix, AZ is whether or not the proper duct work is installed in the house. If the duct work doesn’t match the power of effectiveness of the AC Unit, the unit will not work properly. Duct work helps the air circulation for the ac unit. When the air flow is restricted this can lead to the heat exchanger in the AC unit to crack. This not only reduces the lifespan of the AC Unit but also will release dangerous carbon monoxide into the house.

Third Factor – Routine Maintenance

It is also important to ensure that any AC Unit receives routine maintenance in order to extend its lifespan in extreme temperature locations. This include checking the fittings, lubrication, pressure checks, filter replacement and general maintenance issues. This needs to be done at least once per year, however in extreme heat locations, it is recommended on a bi-annual inspection by a licensed HVAC professional company.

When you look at these three factors it is very easy to see how it’s very difficult to exactly predict the lifespan of any AC Unit. The best way to extend the life of your AC Unit you buy is to make sure the following three items are completed prior to installation:

  • Make sure you buy the right sized AC Unit that is calculated by a HVAC professional
  • Make sure the duct work is sealed for leaks, applicable and functional for the size of AC Unit you are installing in your home
  • Make sure you have the AC unit inspected and maintained every year on a good schedule

Stop wondering “how long do AC units last” and follow these three important factors so you can extend the life of your AC Unit. These factors will save you thousands of dollars in repair and replacement costs and keep your home cool when living in extreme heat cities like Phoenix.
